Cabot´s rings

Autor*: S. Valníček

Description:
BM of 2.5 years old boy with ALL (induction therapy - D11) with marked reduction of erytropoiesis, dyserytropoietic and megaloblastoid changes, and multinucleated erytroblasts. Cabot´s ring was found in a red blood cell in BM smear. Cabot´s or Cabot´s-Schleip´s rings are thread-like rings, coils twisted figures or figures-of-eight, usually of reddish or reddish-violet color in the cytoplasm of erythrocyte (MGG staining). They are found rarely in megaloblastic anaemias e.g. pernicious anaemia, Pb poisoning, dyserytropoetic anaemias (type I), haemolytic anaemias and other severe anaemias. Cabot´s rings are suggested to be remnants of the nucleus or nuclear membrane especially following abnormal cell division.
