Description:
Neuroblastoma, together with rhabdomyosarcoma and Ewing`s sarcoma, belong to primitive neuro-ectodermal tumors with high ratio of metastasis in bone marrow.
Rosetes of tumor cells are frequently present in neuroblastoma and are found in up to two thirds of patients. They are mostly found in the margin of slide.
Rosetes are uncommon in other small cell tumors in childhood but small numbers may be seen in Ewing`s sarcoma.
Neuroblastoma cells are positive for alpha-naphtyl acetate esterase, however, they have distinct morphology from the monocyte lineage.
Sometimes an excentric position of nucleus may occur to identify neuroblastoma cells but single NBL cells in BM are difficult to identify.
In a case of massive BM infiltration the findings on the slide may be very similar to ALL, however, the clinical findings including X ray and urinary catecholamines may be essential for the diagnosis.
Neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma fall into the group of neuroblastic tumours.
Histological subtypes of neuroblastoma :
1) undifferentiated neuroblastoma
2) poorly differentiated neuroblastoma
3) differentiating neuroblastoma
