The lymphoblasts of L1 type are small. The population of the blasts is homogenous. The leukemic lymphoblasts are slightly larger then the mature lymphocytes inthe peripheral blood. They vary only little in size, the cytoplasm is scanty, the nucleus is round, the N/C ratio is very high. The nucleoli are inconspicuous, the nuclear membrane is regular in shape, without incisions.
ALL L1 is the most frequent type (84%) of childhood ALL and has the best prognosis.

The lymphoblasts of L2 type are larger and variable in size, minimally 2x larger then the small lymphocyte. Such large cells must comprise minimally 50% of blastic population.
Light basophilic cytoplasm is abundant, must form more than 20% of cell area in minimally 25% of cells.
The nuclei are often clefted, the nuclear membrane is irregular in minimally 25% of cells. One or more prominent nucleoli are present in minimally 25% of cells.
This type accounts for 14% of childhood ALL and includes 64% of the adult type of ALL.
